The Government Is Still Open
Getting up today, the first thing that I looked up, was if the Government was still open. I think that it is a sad day in this country, when we have to check.
Excuse me, I haven't had my coffee, but I believe these are the facts: a. They have a stopgap measure in place for a few days so they can get their agreement voted on. b. A full budget hasn't been passed yet, but they have a "handshake deal".
Off Topic, Lawrence O'Donnell read a letter on the air last night that was really great. I'll post that later.

Where do I start?
Today, so many things are going on, that I don't know what to comment on first. So here goes nothing.
Wisconsin--Found votes 18 hrs after the polls closed certainly call for a closer look. While it could simply be human error, as was alleged, election fraud needs to be ruled out.
The Shutdown of the Government--The GOP are unwilling to budge on their cuts to Planned Parenthood. This organization, provides one in six women with their birth control (Important if you want to decrease abortions.) While every talking head I heard said it was because of the budget, I think that if they wanted to worry about the budget, they wouldn't have continued the tax cuts to the uber wealthy. Also, the Republicans do not want the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases (one congressman called it the "Koch Brothers Appreciation Act".)
Off topic, but I read two really great books, "The Conscience of a Liberal" by Paul Krugman, and "Rediscovering Values" by Jim Wallis.

Why we need to get involved in the state level politics.
Joan Walsh wrote an editorial in Salon Entitled 'Wisconsin, Obama, and the Democrats Future'. While our rights are under assault and corporations can spend unlimited amounts of money to influence election, the phrase "all politics are local" means more than it ever did.
The Republicans have been working on this assault for years, and today is their Omaha Beach.

16 Tons
Growing up, my parents had a record (yes, there were records then) of Tennessee Ernie Ford, singing a song about the coal industry.
In the early to mid part of the 1900's the coal industry was one of the most corrupt. The owners made workers live in coal towns, paid them in 'script' and the 'script' was only usable at the company-owned store, thus, getting the wages back.
Unions, government regulation, and activism have thankfully ended such blatant abuse. Republicans are trying to take us back to these days. It is time to get involved. Our rights are under assault.

Anniversary of the slaying of Rev. Dr. King
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated 43 years ago today, while helping the sanitation workers of Memphis organize for a strike over less than subsistence wages and unsafe working conditions. During a time that our unions are under assault, and public servants are being portrayed as the enemy. I think it is even more important to honor Dr. King's message of social justice.

Paying for the Bush Tax Cut Extension
Extending the Bush Tax cuts has put the nation in a terrible bind. We are now in a predicament where in order to pay for these we must make terrible cuts to our nation's social safety net.
The Republicans wish to Cut WIC, Food Stamps, Medicare, and Medicaid. It is my opinion that we are trying to pay for a lower tax for the top 2%, by taking food out of children's mouths and possibly killing our most vulnerable. This is because the top 2% need a new sports car, or a vacation.

Giant Power Grab in Ohio
Hidden in Ohio's SB5 is monarch-like power.
Tucked between pages 261 and 266 of Sub. H.B. No. 153 are six pages with 200 lines of budget language that make the OBM Director the most powerful person in the State of Ohio. He can contract out any state service to any “qualified” bidder in order to “more efficiently and effectively” provide those services. Period. That’s it. From ohiobudgetwatch.com
