Disqus Topic of the Day--June 9, The War on Women
The war Planned Parenthood, makes no sense to me. Most of what they do is provide medical help for poor women. They provide birth control to women who would not be able to afford it otherwise, thus cutting down on the need for abortions. So, I don't know why social conservatives aren't holding bake sales for them. They provide cancer screenings.
For fiscal conservatives, "The Guttmacher Institute estimated in 2008 that every dollar spent on family planning saves taxpayers $3.74 in government spending on prenatal care, childbirth, and the first year of an infant's health care." Read More Here
The Ryan Budget is especially hurtful to women. "The House budget, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, would on average double seniors’ out-of-pocket expenses to $12,000 — about $2,000 shy of the average annual income of a female senior, the senators said.

When Koch Attacks, Gas Prices Edition: "Oil-Funded Group: Leave Oil Companies Alone! The billionaire Koch Brothers; their giant oil conglomerate, Koch Industries; and their vast network of right-wing political groups, think tanks, and other organizations are rarely out of the news these days, but the oil profit-fueled, multi-pronged assault on clean energy that Koch groups launched this week is particularly notable [...]"

The $2.5 Trillion Tragedy: What America Has Given Up For 10 Years Of Bush Tax Cuts: "pToday marks the 10th anniversary of former President George W. Bush signing into law his 2001 tax cuts (he passed a second round in 2003). While doing so, Bush promised prosperity and growth, but the nation got neither. The cost of these budget-busting 2001 and 2003 tax cuts was, as estimated by Citizens for Tax [...]/p"

Disqus Topic of the Day--June 7--Medicare
What will happen to this country without Medicare as we know it? The Ryan Plan will end Medicare as we know it. (Calling the new plan the same name, doesn't make it the same plan.) A voucher system that pays a premium support will replace it. This will create a larger payment for an already overburdened elderly society.
The Ryan Budget at the same time, if enacted, will give even more tax breaks for the wealthy.

What Profit It A Man by Cletis L. Stump
Perhaps our greatest struggle with terrorists is truly a struggle for who we are. By our concerted efforts to demonize an entire people, we have lost far more than we have gained. Certainly it makes it easier to kill people when they are degraded and marginalized, but just as certainly it diminishes us as individuals and as a nation. It takes strength to discern and differentiate and lately we have not shown a great deal of courage in that regard.
Demagogues rise to power under the pretext of ensuring public safety and govern through the continual promotion of a national anxiety. Islamic terrorists who murder people are not noble warriors for freedom nor are they justified in their actions. Yet, we torture and kill indiscriminately so our people may live a peaceful Christian life. It's hard not to see the irony.

How Koch Became An Oil Speculation Powerhouse
How Koch Became An Oil Speculation Powerhouse: "In April, ThinkProgress caused a stir when we uncovered a series of Koch Industries corporate documents revealing the company’s role as an oil speculator. Like many oil companies, Koch uses legitimate hedging products to create price stability. However, the documents reveal that Koch is also participating in the unregulated derivatives markets as a financial player, Read more here.
