The Two American Futures We Face--Motivated In Ohio

Yesterday, the CBO released it's report about America's debt.  It gave two different versions of the future.  In the Extended--Baseline Scenario, the Bush Tax Cuts expire, and America is able to offset (though not completely) our increase in health care costs.

In the Alternative Fiscal Scenario, the Tax Cuts are extended.

"The growing imbalance
between revenues and spending, combined with spiraling
interest payments, would swiftly push debt to higher and
higher levels."--CBO

Then comes the most chilling statement of the report.

"Many budget analysts believe that the alternative fiscal
scenario presents a more realistic picture of the nation’s
underlying fiscal policies than the extended-baseline scenario does."--CBO

One (alternative fiscal) scenario would force us to make drastic cuts to programs.

The other (extended baseline) scenario would allow us to keep our promise to our Seniors.

So I ask, why did the Republicans leave the budget talks?  As reported in TPM,  Chris Van Holen said they left because:
Republicans chose to "protect taxpayer subsidies for big oil companies, tax breaks for corporate jets, and tax breaks for millionaires."
Not a way to get us on the right course.

Please read the CBO Report Summary for yourself.

These people need to be taken out of office.  They leave the talks, over corporate jets.  This is absolutely ridiculous.  The average person, wonders how they will make their house payment, keep their car going, and the rising cost of gas and food.  They are so out of touch with the American people, that they actually think this is a sticking point.

Do you have to rob a bank to get decent health care if you aren't rich?

Last week, a North Carolina man, who by all accounts, has been hard working all of his life, robbed a bank for $1 in order to go to jail in order to get health care.  Apparently in this country, this is the length that people have to go to in order to get care.

Since the Bush Great Recession started, more people are without jobs and without places to live.  Jobs with benefits are starting to go the way of the dodo.  Where will that leave the people who are not on the Forbes 400 list?

Also in the news this week, for profit corrections companies, are giving political donations. People in the government of Arizona connected to the for profit Corrections Corporations of America, were influential in pushing through SB 1070, which will benefit CCA greatly.

So again, why isn't the Tea Party against corporate socialism?

Are You Working For The Koch Brothers and Don't Know It?--Motivated In Ohio

The other day, I was commenting at MoveOn.org and heard some very strange things, that I hadn't heard before.

I heard that  FDR made the depression worse.  When I told the person they were rewriting history, they said they believed in the Austrian School of Economics, and gave me the name Hayek and Robert LeFevre  After checking into their views, which I thought were flawed, I briefly wondered where something as bizarre as that could make it into American Politics.  I didn't have to wonder long.  I then reread  the New Yorker Article by Jane Mayer on the Kochs.

In the article, Jane points out that Fred Koch and the John Birch Society were especially influenced by the work of  Friedrich von Hayek. who believed that a centralized government lead to totalitarianism. They also believed in the more radical LeFarve, an anarchist (who didn't like that title) who believed in the elimination of the government. A couple days before when I had looked Hayek up, it seemed to me that his growing up around the war, effected him deeply.  LaFarve wanted to get rid of the government, I thought that spoke for itself.  So that was Daddy Koch's belief.  He passed much of this down to his sons, especially Charles and David.

Glen Beck, the soon to be ex Fox News host is a "friend" of the Koch's and got instruction from them at their conference.  Rush Limbaugh and several other right wing radio, television personalities and elected officials also attended. The reason this is important is because the Kochs wish to provide the script to American Politics.

"According to Doherty’s book, the Kochs came to regard elected politicians as merely “actors playing out a script.” A longtime confidant of the Kochs told Doherty that the brothers wanted to “supply the themes and words for the scripts.” In order to alter the direction of America, they had to “influence the areas where policy ideas percolate from: academia and think tanks"   Read more of the New Yorker Article here

So they have funded many think tanks which repeat their views, buy  influence in colleges, and direct our information.  They have even gone so far as to ghostwrite legislation through ALEC.  If we repeat what they say, we are working for the Koch Brothers.  If you haven't said "I Quit", do so now.

So this is how these bizarre views ended up in American Right Wing Politics.

[Update]  Since around 1980 Koch Employee Richard Fink, has been advocating Hayek's ideas through first "developing intellectual raw materials", then develop these into "policy products". He started an undergraduate program in Austrian Economics, at George Mason University in 1981.

Do You Believe In God or The Invisible Hand Of The Market?

"Free Market" people are always talking about the invisible hand of the market. They say if there is inequity, the market will take care of it.

This "Invisible Hand" knows all things, and will fix all things. It will allocate resources, and take care of all people.

Adam Smith came up with the term, though people really need to read more of his work in order to understand him better. Here is some more of Smith that many people are unfamiliar with.

“What happens when ‘the invisible hand’ lets go of the common good? Adam Smith says without a moral framework the market really can’t function properly, and Schumpeter, the Austrian economist, said, ‘When there’s no ethical sensibility, the market ends up devouring every other sector and finally ends up devouring itself.’
"Sympathy arose from an innate desire to identify with the emotions of others. It could lead people to strive to maintain good relations with their fellow human beings and provide the basis both for specific benevolent acts and for the general social order. Thus was formed within the breast the psychological basis for the desire to obey natural laws."--The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Personally, I don't believe in the invisible hand of the market, I believe in God.

I Am Responsible For The 1/2 term Governor of Alaska Not Knowing The Story Of Paul Revere

As many people who have followed this blog have deduced, I am a liberal.  According to Rick (google me) Santorum, liberals do not want kids to know history. I found his statement odd, since I am against people like David Barton or Mike Huckabee rewriting history (or the Bible) to fit whatever Right Wing Agenda is currently popular.

While I believe in God, I don't want children to be taught in school, that dinosaurs walked the earth the same time as humans.

Texas, with it's current budget crisis, has spent millions, in order to water down the effects of slavery on this country.  The students also have to discuss alternatives to Medicare.

People like Santorum do not want history taught, or they would know we have been here before.  They want a history, that tells people the reason the nation is declining is because we no longer have prayer in the schools, even though  Jesus said to pray in a closet.

They want history that glosses over the evils of slavery in this country.  They want history with an agenda.

They want history, that makes Paul Revere a NRA commercial.  They want education that views kindergarten  sharing as socialism.

They want the history of the labor movement to be erased.  They want no one to understand what McCarthyism, or Father Couglin did to this country.

So yes, if that is standing in the way of people knowing "history", I plead guilty and agree that it is my fault Sarah did not know the story of Paul Revere.

Thoughts on Government, Capitalism, and Socialism--Motivated In Ohio

There is NO government, that is pure Capitalism. There is NO government that is purely Socialistic. ALL governments are halfway between the two. Our national parks are a socialistic program. Most people like the National Parks. Most People want enough Capitalism so that people can innovate and prosper.

Social Security is a Socialist Program, one that keeps most seniors out of poverty. I for one, think it is good. But when an Ayn Rand devotee talks about Capitalism, they always have the risks socialized. Privatized the profits and socialize the risks.

The Old Countries of the Soviet Union, went from Authoritarianism to Way too far Capitalistic , and corruption is rampant. Cuba went too far Socialistic, and now is working toward putting more Capitalism in the mix.

Our government has always been a mix. That's what no one on the right understands. We have a military, that we all pay for, to protect us: socialism. Most people are against profit driven para military corporations for our protection. (While they may see some well defined use for such a company.)

When Corporations were first invented in this country, they were for a specific purpose. When that purpose was finished, they were dissolved by law.

With the 14th amendment, corporations have been given greater rights. With greater rights, came greater abuses.  Not everything should have a profit motive.  Not everything should be collective, as I said, we need to be in the middle.

Jesus Christ--Woody Guthrie

Jesus ChristWords and Music by Woody Guthrie
Jesus Christ was a man who traveled through the land
A hard-working man and brave
He said to the rich, "Give your money to the poor,"
But they laid Jesus Christ in His grave
Jesus was a man, a carpenter by hand
His followers true and brave
One dirty little coward called Judas Iscariot
Has laid Jesus Christ in His Grave
He went to the preacher, He went to the sheriff
He told them all the same
"Sell all of your jewelry and give it to the poor,"
And they laid Jesus Christ in His grave.
When Jesus come to town, all the working folks around
Believed what he did say
But the bankers and the preachers, they nailed Him on the cross,
And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave.
And the people held their breath when they heard about his death
Everybody wondered why
It was the big landlord and the soldiers that they hired
To nail Jesus Christ in the sky
This song was written in New York City
Of rich man, preacher, and slave
If Jesus was to preach what He preached in Galilee,
They would lay poor Jesus in His grave.

The United States of Users--Motivated In Ohio

When I was young, this country built things, there were unions to protect workers and make sure they had decent wages.  After Reagan became President, things started to change.  Alan Greenspan, the Ayn Rand, disciple, became powerful, and the American worker started to be viewed as a parasite.  Now, many years later, people cannot get jobs, Teachers are viewed as the haves (that is just crazy) and this country is unrecognizable.

The people who aren't viewed as parasites, are the ones that brought this country down.  They took sub prime mortgages, wrapped them all together, and sold them as AAA. They shipped jobs to countries where they could enslave the workers.  These are the true parasites.  They have their master (money) and they don't care how they hurt this country to get it.

At one time, when a person invested in a company, they had a general idea what that company was about.  They made something.  A person could decide if the product was of sufficient quality, and desirability, to back.  That is no longer so.

Disqus Topic of the Day--June 20, Crumbling Infrastructure and Job Creation

The United States has a crumbling infrastructure.  Our levies bridges, dams and roadways have become perilous.  Without safe roads, bridges, levies and dams, commerce would be stifled, homes would be threatened and lives will be lost.

The United States needs a stimulus to get our out of our current slump.  We can fix both problems, if we start working on the infrastructure.  How do we get people to listen?  How can we make it so uncomfortable for even the craziest right wing politician, to oppose spending on infrastructure?
