Testimony in opposition to HB136: Statewide Voucher Program
Last night I had the opportunity to directly participate in the legislative process when I provided testimony in front of the House Education Committee. I was privileged to listen to numerous amazing individuals from all over Ohio speak about the adverse effects of this legislation on their schools and community. Sadly, too many Republicans on the committee ignored cold, hard facts and passed the bill, 12-10, moving it to a floor vote. In the end, two Republican committee members went against their party, Representatives Anielski and Baker. Read More Here

Rupert Murdoch's reputation precedes him—but one thing he's not well known for is his education reform advocacy. But that could soon change. Next month, Murdoch will make an unusual public appearance in San Francisco, delivering the keynote address at an education summit hosted by former Florida Gov. After Gutting Public School Budget, Ohio Republicans Try To Give Private Schools More Than $100 Million: As ThinkProgress previously reported, conservative state legislators across the country are cutting budgets for public education while increasing taxpayer money for private schools in the form of school vouchers, essentially shifting taxpayer funds from public schools to private schools. Does God want fracking in Ohio? « Midwest Energy News
Here in Minnesota, we’ve heard the argument that coal was placed in the earth by God for us to use. In Ohio, Gov. John Kasich, at his energy summit this week, is the latest to proclaim the divine providence of fossil fuel resources.
In an address at the summit at Ohio State University, Gov. Kasich enthusiastically describes the economic potential of the Marcellus and Utica shale formations, exploration of which Chesapeake Energy estimates could create more than 200,000 jobs over four years: Read More Here

The Hidden Hands in Redistricting: Corporations and Other Powerful Interests
by Olga Pierce, Jeff Larson and Lois Beckett ProPublica, Sep. 23, 2011, 10:03 a.m.
Their names suggest selfless dedication to democracy. Fair Districts Mass. Protect Your Vote. The Center for a Better New Jersey. And their stated goals are unarguable: In the partisan fight to redraw congressional districts, states should stick to the principle of one person, one vote.
But a ProPublica investigation has found that these groups and others are being quietly bankrolled by corporations, unions and other special interests. Their main interest in the once-a-decade political fight over redistricting is not to help voters in the communities they claim to represent but mainly to improve the prospects of their political allies or to harm their enemies.

We MUST get HB 194 repeal on the ballot — or we're screwed! | OhioDaily
It's not like I haven't known this all along. That's why I carry a half dozen petitions (different counties) with me everywhere I go. That is why I will post any information about signing opportunities anyone alerts me to.
But I just got home from a small gathering of the Cuyahoga Democratic Women's Caucus that really drove home how important this is. As attorney and elections specialist Dora Rose went down the list of things HB 194 would do, there were things even I didn't know about — things virtually guaranteed to disenfranchise thousands of people not fortunate enough to be born rich, white and Republican. Recent Blackout Highlights Nation's Rickety Power Grid
by Ariel Wittenberg ProPublica, Sep. 16, 2011, 1:38 p.m.
Experts say the cascading blackout [1] that put millions of Westerners in the dark last week was no surprise: Major power outages have more than doubled in the last decade.
"This is just evidence that we need a smarter, better, more secure system," said Massoud Amin, director of the Technological Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota, who has analyzed federal data on the reliability of the nation's electric grid.
Blackouts disrupt power to at least a third of U.S. homes each year, and studies show the number of outages is rising [2].

Science Lags As Health Problems Emerge Near Gas Fields
by Abrahm Lustgarten and Nicholas Kusnetz ProPublica, Sep. 16, 2011, 5:35 p.m.
On a summer evening in June 2005, Susan Wallace-Babb went out into a neighbor's field near her ranch in Western Colorado to close an irrigation ditch. She parked down the rutted double-track, stepped out of her truck into the low-slung sun, took a deep breath, and collapsed, unconscious.A natural gas well and a pair of fuel storage tanks sat less than a half-mile away. Later, after Wallace-Babb came to and sought answers, a sheriff's deputy told her that a tank full of gas condensate -- liquid hydrocarbons gathered from the production process -- had overflowed into another tank. The fumes must have drifted toward the field where she was working, he suggested.
