AG DeWine says Highway Patrol has authority in new private prison. He’s wrong.
AG DeWine says Highway Patrol has authority in new private prison. He’s wrong.
Early last month I discussed attempts by Kasich and Batchelder to help grant Public Safety Director Tom Charles his secret wish: expanding the Ohio State Highway Patrol into a State Police organization, giving them power to investigate crimes and enforce laws on non-state property.
Current law clearly limits the Patrol’s jurisdiction to state owned or leased property except in the case of an extreme emergency, but Charles has convinced his pals in the Governor’s office and the Legislature – and now, it seems, in the AG’s office too – to help him change that. Read More Here

Five U.S. Senators Are Perfect Koch Servants, Americans For Prosperity Reports
Five U.S. Senators Are Perfect Koch Servants, Americans For Prosperity Reports: Five senators and 39 representatives received a perfect 100 percent score from the Koch brothers’ Astroturf group Americans For Prosperity for the first half of the 112th Congress. AFP judged Congress on their votes to protect the Koch brothers’ right-wing petrochemical empire on such issues as the repeal of President Obama’s new health care law, [...]/ Read More Here

You Should Vote Romney (Parody of "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift)
LYRICS
You're on the phone with Rush Limbaugh, you're upset
You're going off about something that Mitt said
'Cause he's not a true conservative like you
You're at the polls it's a primary Tuesday night
You're looking at a bunch of candidates you don't like
But you'll never find someone who inspires you
Rick Santorum's scared of gay folks
There's no way he can win any swing votes
Vote for Ron Paul, and I'm sorry to say
It'd be like Barry Goldwater vs. LBJ
Can't you see you need the candidate who's been
Campaigning for six years unsuccessfully
You should vote Romney
You should vote Romney
Watching FOX News, the debate's on you're TV
Can't help thinking that you wanted Chris Christie
Hearing Mitt flip flop thinkin' to yourself
Hey isn't Mitt sleazy?
And he's got a smile like a creepy game show host
The kinda guy who puts nothing on his toast
He's like a robot that has perfect hair
And wearing funny Mormon underwear
All you hate more than abortions
Are Mitt Romney's verbal contortions
Every other day he'll be changing his mind
Pretending he's agreed with your views this whole time
There are so many good reasons not to like him
But for his electability
You should vote Romney
If your goal is to defeat Barack Obama
As a simple matter of strategy
You should vote Romney
Now let me tell you that it's really kind of dumb you don't like the candidate
With the single greatest chance to defeat the guy you hate.
I know your favorite thing is to loathe his liberal schemes
But your gonna help him stay until 2017
Can't you see that he's the only one who could make
Marco Rubio become the VP
You should vote Romney
Stand by while you wait for Bobby Jindal
Even if you're part of the Tea Party
You should vote Romney
You should vote Romney
Everyone in the GOP
You should vote Romney
You should vote Romney

License Plate Slogans the Plain Dealer Wouldn’t Print
License Plate Slogans the Plain Dealer Wouldn’t Print
Back in October John Kasich asked Ohioans to suggest slogans to appear on Ohio’s new license plates.
At the time, we made some suggestions, and it turns out we may have had at least a little impact on the over 400,000 responses received by the Ohio BMV. Read More Here

ANALYSIS: GOP Candidates’ Tax Cuts For The Rich Are Up To 270 Times Larger Than Their Tax Cuts For The Middle Class
ANALYSIS: GOP Candidates’ Tax Cuts For The Rich Are Up To 270 Times Larger Than Their Tax Cuts For The Middle Class: The 2012 Republican candidates are largely in lockstep when it comes to economic policy, wanting to give huge tax cuts to the rich and corporations while doing next to nothing to boost consumer demand or help the middle class and the unemployed who have been battered by the Great Recession. In fact, according to an [...]/ Read More Here

Yet Another Charter School Using Public Money To Enrich Its CEO | Crooks and Liars
Yet Another Charter School Using Public Money To Enrich Its CEO | Crooks and Liars
For those of us who live in areas where charter schools flourish, we've seen some variation of this story over and over again - charter school CEOs who enrich themselves and their friends at the expense of the students and faculty. These schools are far too frequently vehicles for corruption:
A Monroe County charter school has violated the state charter school law by having "improper entanglements" with a church run by the school's founder, according to a preliminary report issued by the state auditor general's office. Read More Here

What it is like in "fly over country"--Motivated In Ohio
I live in a town that used to be prosperous; there was manufacturing and people worked at making things. What station a person worked in the manufacturing sector depended on their education, initiative, and understanding of the business. People who were unable to continue their education, could still make a wage where they could build a good life for themselves and their families.
Those times are gone. Businesses have been outsourced for the last 30 years and there are tons of empty factories. The retail sector, not having enough business since their customers no longer had money to purchase, closed down also. The mall is a shell with a few businesses still struggling to remain open but, one by one, they die a slow death. There are a few grocery stores in the area, along with several stores with the name Dollar in their title and a big box superstore.
This is what 30 years of Reaganomics has gotten this country. This is the new normal.
Vulture capitalists break up businesses, rob pensions, and leave the now shattered companies on the brink of bankruptcy. This is what we are fighting. Is it any wonder people are protesting?

The Book of Cletis: The Spark That Lit A Fire
The Spark That Lit A Fire
I think often about connections and how seemingly small events often produce cataclysmic change. When Mohammed Bouazizi, a struggling fruit vendor in Tunisia, set himself ablaze on December 17, 2010 in response to the confiscication of his wares and humiliation inflicted on him by a municipal official and her aides, little did the ruling dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, realize his rule was at an end. 5 Things You Should Know About the FBI's Massive New Biometric Database | Civil Liberties | AlterNet
5 Things You Should Know About the FBI's Massive New Biometric Database | Civil Liberties | AlterNet
Civil libertarians worry about the roll-out of Next Generation Identification, a massive expansion of the agency's current biometric database.
The FBI claims that their fingerprint database (IAFIS) is the "largest biometric database in the world," containing records for over a hundred million people. But that's nothing compared to the agency's plans for Next Generation Identification (NGI), a massive, billion-dollar upgrade that will hold iris scans, photos searchable with face recognition technology, palm prints, and measures of gait and voice recordings alongside records of fingerprints, scars, and tattoos. Robert Reich (The Decline of the Public Good)
Robert Reich (The Decline of the Public Good)
Meryl Streep’s eery reincarnation of Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” brings to mind Thatcher’s most famous quip, “there is no such thing as ‘society.’” None of the dwindling herd of Republican candidates has quoted her yet but they might as well considering their unremitting bashing of everything public.
What defines a society is a set of mutual benefits and duties embodied most visibly in public institutions — public schools, public libraries, public transportation, public hospitals, public parks, public museums, public recreation, public universities, and so on. Read More Here

Black Man Confronts Gingrich On Food Stamps Comments: ‘Stop Using Blacks As A Punching Bag’: MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich defended himself today against charges of racial insensitivity by noting that he’s worked with African-American leaders in the past.
