Why We Got Ayn Rand Instead of FDR: Thomas Frank on How Tea Party 'Populism' Derailed a New New Deal | | AlterNet:
After a brutal recession was brought on by Wall Street greed, it looked for a moment like we'd rejected the Right's economic mythology. Then the "Tea Party" came along.
Editor's note: In late 2007 and early 2008, the house of cards came crashing down around us, and all of the economic doctrine we'd been fed by the pundits and politicians of both parties over the past few decades was laid bare for all to see. The deregulated cowboy capitalism that was supposed to release unbridled prosperity had led instead to widespread economic pain – hardship that would spread globally and remain with us to this day.
It was a moment ripe for a populist uprising. Many observers expected the pendulum to swing back from the rightward lurch authored during the “Reagan Revolution” – perhaps a new New Deal would emerge as America elected its first black president in a dramatic rejection of George W. Bush's business-friendly ideology. Read More Here

Hydraulic fracking threatens environment, property rights | Coshocton Tribune | coshoctontribune.com:
The privately owned, for-profit group organizing landowners in Coshocton County to conduct directional drilling for Utica shale gas have presented much information covering the supposed benefits of hydraulic fracturing. Unfortunately, there has been little other information about the documented potential for environmental disaster and the assault on county landowners' property rights if they choose not to participate in their neighbors' drilling projects. The War on Women, battle number I've lost count | OhioDaily:
A lot of you may have seen this story which exploded and spread like wildfire today:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/susan-g-komen-founda...
The venerable Susan G. Komen Foundation "for the cure", which ostensibly exists to prevent breast cancer deaths, has yanked the funding it has directed to Planned Parenthood, primarily for breast cancer screenings. In other words, for doing something that is the front line of preventing breast cancer deaths. Read More Here

[CONTEST] Where in the world is Josh Mandel?:
Josh Mandel has been amazingly busy during his first year as Treasurer. Unfortunately, much of that time has been spent on the road (in DC, Florida, Hawaii, etc.) fund raising for his Senate Campaign instead of in Columbus running the Treasurer’s office like he was elected to do. Read More Here

The Obama Memos: How Washington Remade the President : The New Yorker
The Obama Memos: How Washington Remade the President : The New Yorker:
On a frigid January evening in 2009, a week before his Inauguration, Barack Obama had dinner at the home of George Will, the Washington Post columnist, who had assembled a number of right-leaning journalists to meet the President-elect. Accepting such an invitation was a gesture on Obama’s part that signalled his desire to project an image of himself as a post-ideological politician, a Chicago Democrat eager to forge alliances with conservative Republicans on Capitol Hill. That week, Obama was still working on an Inaugural Address that would call for “an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics.”

The SEC Mulls An Investigation Calls Grow For John Boehner To Resign
The SEC Mulls An Investigation Calls Grow For John Boehner To Resign:
It is an ethics violation for elected officials to use their political office to perform official acts on behalf of special interests, and particularly when special interests are campaign donors. There is also a serious problem when a sitting congressional representative performs official acts for personal financial profit by promoting a project the representative has a financial stake in. The problem becomes egregious when the elected official lies about a project to profit himself and campaign donors and our current Speaker of the House has taken those issues a step farther. On Thursday, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) received a complaint from an environmental group with accusations that the proposed Keystone XL pipeline’s owners (TransCanada) are in violation of SEC Rule 10b(5) – Employment of Manipulative and Deceptive Practices to bolster stock prices.
